44th World Congress of Vine and Wine

44th World Congress of Vine and Wine
“Viticulture and information technologie”

5 to 9 June 2023
Cádiz/Jerez, Spain

Presentation

Welcome from the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Luis Planas Puchades

Spain, a country with a deep tradition and immense wine potential, has the honor to invite you to participate in the 44th World Congress of Vine and Wine that we held, between June 5 and 9, in Jerez de la Frontera and Cádiz.

As the promoting entity, together with the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food is proud to make Spain the host country of this important world congress, which has not been held on Spanish soil since the edition of La Rioja, in 2006.

And as a country with the largest vineyard in the world, with more than 945,000 hectares distributed throughout the national territory, and a world leader in volume of exports, we are very excited to host this meeting where the best experts and specialists in the field of viticulture and oenology come together to share ideas, knowledge and innovative proposals.

The Congress of Cádiz and Jerez de la Frontera is also a unique opportunity to create networks and collaborate on a global scale with the aim of improving the wine sector and consolidating its long-term success.

Spain has more than 150 different grape varieties and 144 wines of differentiated quality (101 designations of origin and 43 protected geographical indications). The wine production processes also contribute to our image as a country, where wine is a symbol of tradition and culture, as well as avant-garde and progress. In fact, it is a leading sector and at the forefront of innovation and research, and it is constantly changing and adapting.

This is also the focus of the 44th World Congress of Vine and Wine, since under the title "Viticulture and information technologies", it will address the contemporary challenges of the sector in the face of the rise of technologies and the increase in the connectivity. It is increasingly important that viticulture incorporate digitization and different information technologies to improve its efficiency, scope and sustainability. The scientific program of the Congress seeks progress in this regard through four thematic sessions that include viticulture, oenology, law and information for consumers, and food safety, nutrition and health.

Information technologies can improve aspects such as traceability and transparency in the supply chain, which favor the guarantee of wine quality and safety. They can also help optimize efficiency in production and distribution, and therefore reduce waste.

In short, technological innovation is key to the future of the sector and I am fully confident that this Congress will be an opportunity to explore and adopt innovative solutions from the vine to the glass.

We are going to put everything necessary to reach conclusions on how technologies can improve the sustainability of the sector in each and every one of its productions (table grapes, raisins, vinegar, wine and derived drinks) to face the challenges of the present and the future.

I want to encourage all the participants to explore all the possible applications of technologies in their work and in their production processes, as well as in their communication and relationship with society in general.

I hope you enjoy the Congress and your stay with us in two beautiful cities such as Cádiz and Jerez de la Frontera.

Welcome from OIV President Prof. Luigi Moio

Dear Colleagues,

After 1929, 1951, 1973, 1992 and 2006, this is the sixth time that the Kingdom of Spain is hosting the world vine and wine community in almost a century, and the OIV always welcomes these invitations with great pleasure. On a personal level, I am truly delighted to be part of a world congress in Spain once again.

Boasting the world’s largest vineyard area and with a winemaking tradition spanning millennia, Spain has undergone a major transformation in recent years, creating a large number of modern wineries producing wines of the highest quality.

The 44th World Congress of Vine and Wine is taking place in one of Spain’s internationally renowned wine-producing jewels. The Province of Cadiz and the city of Jerez provide the backdrop for experts from all over the world to come together and discuss the general theme of ‘Viticulture and Information Technologies’.

In just a few years, the vine and wine world has entered the age of digital technology. Electronic labelling, digital traceability, blockchain, big data, artificial intelligence, satellite imagery, robotics and smart sensors connected to the internet at every stage of production have all become commonplace. These technologies bring extraordinary opportunities that will speed up decision-making and enable the development of increasingly precise and sustainable production processes.

Over the last century, the OIV has planned for and participated in the changes witnessed by our sector. Our task today is to be at the cutting edge of these new information technologies, which must find their proper place in an age-old industry imbued with rich heritage and strong symbolic value.

I am particularly pleased to welcome you to this prestigious event in the wine world calendar, and on behalf of the Member States of the OIV, I would like to express my gratitude and thanks to Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food for its kind invitation.

43rd World Congress of Vine and Wine

43rd World Congress of Vine and Wine
“Current Challenges: Sustainability, Covid And Climate Change”

31 October to 4 November 2022
Ensenada, Mexico

Presentation

Mexico is the first country with a wine tradition in America.

From a tradition as beautiful as wine production, countless stories have emerged throughout the world, and Mexico has not been oblivious to this legacy because to speak of wine in our country is to speak of more than four centuries of history born as part of an old world heritage.

Thanks to this fact, it has given us the possibility for this sector to be positioned as a source of regional development, generator of jobs, investment, trade, tourism, research and innovation.

For Mexico, this activity is of such importance that it is currently the second most important source of employment within the sector, generating more than 500 thousand direct jobs and three times more indirect jobs. This activity is present in 50 percent of the states that make up the national territory, providing its people and those who visit them with six wine tourism routes that strengthen regional development.

Our country has 39,000 hectares planted, of which more than 60 percent are used for the production of table grapes, 11 percent for raisins, and about 23 percent for wine production.

One of the most important objectives of this government is to move towards a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient wine industry that is reflected in the well-being of its people and in the economy. That is why we work together, through public-private collaboration, together with producers, researchers and international organizations, to face the challenges derived from nature and the economic and social dynamics in which this agroindustry is immersed. We are sure that with the leadership of the International Organization of Vine and Wine, these challenges will be easier to address.

Aware of the importance of these topics, and prioritizing the exchange of experiences and knowledge, the scientific program of the 43rd World Congress of Vine and Wine will be developed under the guiding axis: “Current challenges: sustainability, COVID and climate change”, in four thematic sessions in which viticulture, oenology, economics and law, as well as safety and health, will be addressed.

We are waiting for you with open arms and glasses up to join us in the Congress, which will be held from October 30 to November 4, 2022, in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.

¡Bienvenue, Grüezi, Benvenuti, Welcome, Добро пожаловать, Bienvenidos!

Víctor Manuel Villalobos Arámbula
Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Government of Mexico

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is my privilege to welcome you to Mexico, which is set to host the OIV’s World Congress and General Assembly for the second time.

Following on from the Congress and General Assembly in Tijuana in 1980, Ensenada city in Baja California will be at the centre of the vine and wine world, bringing together hundreds of experts, scientists and managers to attend the 43rd World Congress Vine and Wine on 31 October to 4 November 2022.

Thanks to the warm invitation of Mexico’s Secretariat for Agriculture and the inestimable work done by the Organising Committee, the best conditions will be available to all participants for presenting communication and making proposals on this year’s topic: “Current challenges: sustainability, COVID and climate change”.

We know how these challenges are impacting the world as a whole and our vine and wine world in particular. After 2 years, it will be so good to meet again and I am convinced that the traditional Mexican Day of the Dead, declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, will also be a re-birth for our collective activities.

Mexico, an OIV member since 1969, is both a North American and a Latin American country, and as such, is perfectly placed to facilitate discussion and cultural exchange, and the sharing of experiences in the field of viticulture, vine and wine.

A very warm welcome to you all,

Viva OIV y Viva Mexico!

Baja California is one of the 14 wine-producer states. It currently contributes 75% of national production.

It geographically adjoins the Pacific Ocean, obtaining its Mediterranean weather, ideal for wine production. The agricultural valleys are located between 20 and 550 meters above sea level; Baja California currently houses 260 vine producers, 170 winemaking projects, which represent 70% county-wide. It is the state with greater grape diversity used for winemaking production-wise and experimental-wise. Our well known Valle de Guadalupe is a wine tourism platform for oenophiles, but also for people that want to introduce themselves in the wine industry.

42nd World Congress of Vine and Wine

42nd World Congress of Vine and Wine
"Preserve and innovate: Environmental, economic and social expectations"

15 - 19 July 2019
Geneva, Switzerland

Presentation

FOAG’s Welcome Words

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Switzerland, a country with a centuries-old tradition of wine growing, has the honour of inviting you to take part in the 42nd World Congress Vine and Wine to be held from 15 to 19 July 2019 in Geneva.

A small wine-growing country, but one which offers great diversity, Swiss vineyards are divided into six wine-growing regions: German-speaking Switzerland, Ticino, the Three Lakes area, the Valais region, the canton of Vaud and Geneva. All of them offer a wide range of superb soils, grape varieties and vineyard landscapes. They will be closely involved in running the 42nd Congress.

For many decades through agricultural research, the Swiss Confederation has been working towards sustainable wine production which meets the challenges posed by our environment.

Under the title "Preserve and innovate: Environmental, economic and social expectations", the scientific work of the Congress will centre around four sessions: wine growing, oenology, economics and law, together with safety and health.

An inaugural session on Monday 15 July, which is open to a wide audience, will have the theme "A reasoned approach to inputs: scientific contributions and consumer perception".

The Organising Committee of the 42nd World Congress of Vine and Wine and the Swiss Federal Office for Agriculture would like to thank and congratulate Uruguay for holding the 41st Congress of the OIV in Punta del Este and look forward to welcoming those involved in wine growing throughout the world to Switzerland in 2019.

Bienvenue, Grüezi, Benvenuto, Welcome!

Federal Office of Agriculture (FOAG)

Organising Committee’s Welcome Words

From July 15th to July 19th 2019, Switzerland will host the 42nd World Congress of Vine and Wine as well as the General Assembly of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). This is a milestone event for global wine producers expected in Geneva for a week.

Each year, a World Congress of Vine and Wine and a General Assembly OIV take place in one of the Member States, bringing together the greatest experts in this field. The first edition of the Congress was held in 1928 in France. Switzerland, a member of the OIV since 1934, has hosted it twice: in 1935 in Lausanne, then 42 years later, in 1977 in Nyon, coinciding with an edition of the Fête des Vignerons.

In October 2016, the General Assembly of International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) in Brazil selected Switzerland for the organisation of its 42nd Congress and General Assembly in 2019, which coincides with the next Fête des Vignerons. Based on this decision, the Federal Office of Agriculture (FOAG), the official representative of Switzerland at the OIV, entrusted the organisation of this event to the Association OIV 2019 established for this purpose.

This 42nd Congress is a unique opportunity for Swiss vitiviniculture to strengthen its international reputation in terms of research and innovation, to confirm the qualitative positioning of its research, training and indigenous production programs, as well as to maintain international relations, essential for the future of the Swiss wine industry.

It is a unifying project for all Swiss viticulture!

Submission

Paper submissions must be uploaded on-line via abstract submission platform of the Congress. Submissions must be received by 20th February 2017.

A. Authors are required to:

  1. Select the form of presentation. Three types of presentation are possible:
    I. Communication orale (15 - 20 minutes).
    II. Short communication (5 - 10 minutes).
    III. Poster.
  2. Select a theme and a sub-theme under which the abstract should be reviewed by the Joint Reading and Selection Committee. The Joint Reading and Selection Committee reserve the right to change the section and the sub-theme previously chosen by the author.

The Reading and Selection Committee takes the final decision on the adoption or rejection of a proposed abstract. The final type of presentation shall be determined by the Reading and Selection Committee. If the committee does not select a presentation as an "oral presentation", the paper can still be accepted as a short presentation or a poster.
