43rd World Congress of Vine and Wine

43rd World Congress of Vine and Wine
“Current Challenges: Sustainability, Covid And Climate Change”

31 October to 4 November 2022
Ensenada, Mexico

Presentation

Mexico is the first country with a wine tradition in America.

From a tradition as beautiful as wine production, countless stories have emerged throughout the world, and Mexico has not been oblivious to this legacy because to speak of wine in our country is to speak of more than four centuries of history born as part of an old world heritage.

Thanks to this fact, it has given us the possibility for this sector to be positioned as a source of regional development, generator of jobs, investment, trade, tourism, research and innovation.

For Mexico, this activity is of such importance that it is currently the second most important source of employment within the sector, generating more than 500 thousand direct jobs and three times more indirect jobs. This activity is present in 50 percent of the states that make up the national territory, providing its people and those who visit them with six wine tourism routes that strengthen regional development.

Our country has 39,000 hectares planted, of which more than 60 percent are used for the production of table grapes, 11 percent for raisins, and about 23 percent for wine production.

One of the most important objectives of this government is to move towards a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient wine industry that is reflected in the well-being of its people and in the economy. That is why we work together, through public-private collaboration, together with producers, researchers and international organizations, to face the challenges derived from nature and the economic and social dynamics in which this agroindustry is immersed. We are sure that with the leadership of the International Organization of Vine and Wine, these challenges will be easier to address.

Aware of the importance of these topics, and prioritizing the exchange of experiences and knowledge, the scientific program of the 43rd World Congress of Vine and Wine will be developed under the guiding axis: “Current challenges: sustainability, COVID and climate change”, in four thematic sessions in which viticulture, oenology, economics and law, as well as safety and health, will be addressed.

We are waiting for you with open arms and glasses up to join us in the Congress, which will be held from October 30 to November 4, 2022, in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.

¡Bienvenue, Grüezi, Benvenuti, Welcome, Добро пожаловать, Bienvenidos!

Víctor Manuel Villalobos Arámbula
Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Government of Mexico

Dear colleagues and friends,

It is my privilege to welcome you to Mexico, which is set to host the OIV’s World Congress and General Assembly for the second time.

Following on from the Congress and General Assembly in Tijuana in 1980, Ensenada city in Baja California will be at the centre of the vine and wine world, bringing together hundreds of experts, scientists and managers to attend the 43rd World Congress Vine and Wine on 31 October to 4 November 2022.

Thanks to the warm invitation of Mexico’s Secretariat for Agriculture and the inestimable work done by the Organising Committee, the best conditions will be available to all participants for presenting communication and making proposals on this year’s topic: “Current challenges: sustainability, COVID and climate change”.

We know how these challenges are impacting the world as a whole and our vine and wine world in particular. After 2 years, it will be so good to meet again and I am convinced that the traditional Mexican Day of the Dead, declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, will also be a re-birth for our collective activities.

Mexico, an OIV member since 1969, is both a North American and a Latin American country, and as such, is perfectly placed to facilitate discussion and cultural exchange, and the sharing of experiences in the field of viticulture, vine and wine.

A very warm welcome to you all,

Viva OIV y Viva Mexico!

Prof. Luigi MOIO
President of the OIV

Baja California is one of the 14 wine-producer states. It currently contributes 75% of national production.

It geographically adjoins the Pacific Ocean, obtaining its Mediterranean weather, ideal for wine production. The agricultural valleys are located between 20 and 550 meters above sea level; Baja California currently houses 260 vine producers, 170 winemaking projects, which represent 70% county-wide. It is the state with greater grape diversity used for winemaking production-wise and experimental-wise. Our well known Valle de Guadalupe is a wine tourism platform for oenophiles, but also for people that want to introduce themselves in the wine industry.
